Dresssed in a dazzling red gown, her glossy dark hair piled on top of her head, Lydia Collins smiles confidently at the camera - the image of a girl on the cusp of womanhood. The vivacious 16-year-old is seen here happily posing in her living room, before her school's summer ball in 2001.
And yet within two years of this photograph, this vital, beautiful teenager was dead.
She was struck with terrible suddenness by an aggressive form of leukaemia that robbed her of the bright future she had planned as a French teacher, and her parents of the chance to watch her growing up into the caring and successful adult they knew she would become.
But it also robbed James Morrison, the gravel-voiced singer whose album Undiscovered is No 1, of his closest, most treasured friend.
Lydia, a straight-A student from Newquay in Cornwall, had planned to study languages at Cardiff University.
She wanted to travel and see the world. Indeed, she had just returned from a summer working with disadvantaged children in Africa and was studying for her A-levels when she was diagnosed with the disease in 2002.
Popular and bright, Lydia had a tremendous zest for life. And had she lived she would have been thrilled to see James make it to No 1 in the pop chart. It was what she, his muse and biggest fan, had always predicted - even when he was often less than confident about his abilities.
She and James met when she was 14 and he was 15. Morrison is now 21 and his album, laconically titled Undiscovered, is the hit of the summer, his sandpaper voice the result of a bout of whooping cough as an infant.

But in his success he has not forgotten the beautiful teenager who inspired him. On the album's sleeve notes he writes: 'A special message to Lydia: You are a true angel and I will never forget you. You'll always be in my heart.'
Speaking from Lydia's family home - a neat detached house overlooking the sea - her mother Gail told The Mail on Sunday that she wept when she read the poignant tribute. 'We had no idea he was going to pay her such an accolade on the album.
'It really touched our hearts that he thought of her,' she said.
'It was so kind of James to remember her. We were so moved by the special message and we shed a tear when we saw it.'
It might seem at first that the friends' different backgrounds made them unlikely soulmates.
Lydia came from a happy, solid, working-class background, rooted for generations in Cornwall. Her father Mike is a master joiner and Gail is a housewife who worked as a shop assistant once her children had grown up.
James, on the other hand, was born on a rundown crime and drugs-ridden council estate in Rugby, Warwickshire. His family were poor and struggled. Things hit rock bottom after his alcoholic father, Paul Catchpole, walked out and the family were made homeless.

James, his older sister Hayley, now 23, and a younger brother Laurie, 18, were brought up by their mother Suzy, a free-spirited former nurse.

They moved frequently, and it was only after the family settled in a rundown house near the beach in Newquay, seven years ago, that James discovered a talent for singing, and began busking.
'Cornwall was a great place to be,' he has said. 'Being near the sea was very inspiring. I used to play gigs on the beach.'

But Lydia, who lived nearby, was his main inspiration. She sang beautifully, played the saxophone and had reached Grade 5 in piano. James was the one with the ambition to become a professional singer and Lydia became his biggest cheerleader and fan.
Gail recalls: 'They met at school. They weren't dating, just friends. They would sit on the beach all evening until it got dark I used to call her in for an evening meal, and then she would go back out to join him again.
'They used to sit for hours. James would play his guitar and they would sing Beatles songs. Her favourite was Hey Jude. She loved it. James was really good, even then.'
She was fully behind him when he formed a four-member school band called Peppermint Slug, which played in local pubs.
He also performed on school speech days and Helen Mathieson, head of Treviglas College, said: 'We are tremendously proud of him. He is a lovely boy and very talented.'
Yet there were times when James lost faith in his abilities. He considered giving in several times, but remembered all Lydia's encouraging words and that always gave him a lift.
Her father says: 'Lydia thought James was, in her words, 'a sound guy'.'
And then he recalls how they discovered their daughter's illness: 'We noticed she wasn't feeling well at the end of the summer holidays in 2002.
'We had been out to celebrate her sister Carmel's 21st birthday and we all walked down to the beach and back.

'Lydia was quite breathless and looked pale, and told me she had been feeling really tired lately. I told her to see the doctor the next day.
'They did tests and realised it was something serious. A few days later, we were sitting on the ward with her and the doctor came round and told her she had leukaemia. It was a total shock.
'I asked Lydia how she felt and she said it was as if there was a dull ring in her head. She had a job to take it in. At that stage they said it was curable, but unfortunately that wasn't the case.
'They gave her a blood transfusion to top up her blood because she was so anaemic. And they started her on a chemotherapy course, which should have covered two years but in fact she died after just ten weeks, in the November.'
Mike adds: 'That was four years ago yet I keep thinking she's going to walk back through that door.
'It is very sad. She had so much to live for, and so wanted to live. I don't think I shall ever get over her death; I miss her such a lot, even now.'
James, too, was devastated when he heard the news of her death. Although he was a year older, he and Lydia had developed a deep and unbroken bond during their time at Treviglas.

Mike says: 'He was at her funeral and was very upset.'
Mike and Gail visit Lydia's grave every day. They often sit on a blue bench dedicated to her, near the spot where she and James spent their time.
Though devastated, James persevered with his music career. He channelled his heartbreak and elements of his troubled past into songs that he says are an honest reflection of his broken childhood and tough upbringing.
He has poured all the agony of his turbulent life into the lyrics of his soulful tunes.
'I wanted to get across that there is positivity. Like me there are people who have had bad times but at the same time have pulled through,' he has said. 'Songs can exaggerate things. But I think you always have to write from personal experience.'
With that in mind, it seems highly probable that James penned the following lines from the first track on his album, Under The Influence, with Lydia in mind:
But it's not just his special schoolfriend who receives an acknowledgment on the album.

Despite his early hardships, James holds no bitterness and of one song, a track about his mother, he says: 'The song is to tell her that I don't blame her. Yes, we had a hard time growing up and yes, she was unpredictable and bad-tempered but it wasn't her fault.'
James even has a good word to say for his 55-year-old father Paul Catchpole (James changed his name for artistic reasons) who still lives on the seedy estate where the family grew up.
In an album tribute, James, whose voice has been described as somewhere between Al Green and Otis Redding, says: 'Dad, thanks for introducing me to your amazing record collection and for keeping my feet on the ground.'
But it is Lydia who gets the album's special message.
Her father says: 'We never knew much about what they discussed or how much Lydia influenced James, but she must have made a deep impression for him to put the tribute on the album. We told James he would be famous one day and it's truly well deserved. He is a lovely boy, very kind and fun-loving.'
Mike adds: 'I've bought the album and as I sit listening to it, it reminds me of Lydia and James. It really is brilliant. Lydia would have been so proud of him.
'James has helped to keep her memory alive for us.'
